For all the times I had visited NYC, I had yet to visit the Intrepid. The Intrepid is a huge ship that sits along the West side of Manhattan. It’s a sea, air and space museum that offers a unique experience — go aboard the ship and get an up close and personal look at what it was like to be on board during operations.

The museum also offers a flight deck that you can visit that houses a wide range of jets, helicopters and other aircraft. If you are a bit of a military junkie, this museum is one that you’ll want to add to your must-see list while in New York.

But, before you rush off to grab your tickets, let me get real with you for a minute… I went into this museum expecting to get a lot more hands-on experience inside the ship. However, I was sorely disappointed when I realized that you only get to see about 2% of the ship. They take you through a few of the quarters and the captain’s bay but I wanted to see more of the ship — where the crew slept, the mess quarters, etc.

The best part about the museum was the flight deck. In fact, they should offer an admission price that includes only that because I would have rather paid less to experience that piece. Seeing the jets up close was really neat and they do have a wide variety of aircraft up there.

The interior of the museum was a little disappointing, too, but mostly I just wanted a more hands-on experience and to explore the ship a little more. Maybe some day they’ll open that up a bit more for the public but until then, I’ll likely never return.

One thing to note: the views of the city from the flight deck are nice. Make sure to take a moment up there and snap some skyline photos.

Now, on to the photo tour.
